Blade Runner BluRay

February 17, 2010 by John 2 Comments »

Blade Runner is my favorite movie. I’ve seen it in the theater on each of the various releases and it continues to hold its position as my #1 fave. I’ve been considering the purchase of the film in DVD but with so many versions – and now the various BluRay versions – it seemed like a huge effort to determine which one to get. Well, it was made pretty simple earlier today when I found this special online offering the 5 DVD BluRay mega-mondo-ubercool edition for $14. As of mid-day 2/17 it still worked, so if you’re reading this post and it interests you, get on over there and start clicking.

So spake Rutger Hauer, reciting the final lines of replicant Roy Batty: I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams … glitter in the dark near Tanhauser Gate. All those … moments will be lost … in time, like tears … in rain. Time … to die.

Einstürzende Neubauten : At The Mouth Of Madness

January 6, 2009 by john 2 Comments »

Today I received confirmation from Neubauten.org that my recent DVD order is shipping. “Recent” is a relative thing… I actually placed the order back on 11/29/2008, but I’m sure the delay is a combination of the holidays and the generally methodical pace of German industry. The DVD is a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains Of Madness, with musical score provided by my favorite band “Einstürzende Neubauten”. The project is pretty exciting. I’m a huge fan of the band and have supported their efforts for over 2 decades, purchasing music and video, and attending their concerts whenever they tour the US. And H.P. Lovecraft is my favorite author! So this is a perfect conjunction for my tastes. I’m sure it will take a few weeks for the package to arrive, but at some point next month I intend to have an evening of watching this DVD. Review to follow…

Kissology Vol 2

Kissology 2As a follow up to my commentary on Kissology Vol 1, I recently received my copy of Kissology Vol 2. This second DVD set covers the years 1978 – 1991, which were in many ways difficult and strange times for KISS.

As KISS moved from being 1970’s larger-than-life comic book superheroes to being a 1980’s butt-rock (a.k.a. “hair metal”) band, it felt like they had lost part of what made them unique. It seemed like a step toward the mainstream of rock at that time. Their success in this move was undeniable, and it did renew their fan base with a fresh infusion of believers. Seeing the band on MTV without makeup was both a thrill and a letdown. It reminded me of being a kid and discovering my local Santa was actually just some guy in a costume. As noted in many reviews of this DVD set, the Tom Snyder interview is great; Ace is looped and Gene is annoyed. It’s clear foreshadowing of what was to come.

Peter Gabriel – Secret World Live (DVD)

February 26, 2007 by john No Comments »

Peter Gabriel: Secret World LiveThis is perhaps my favorite concert DVD. I’ve owned it on no less than three formats (Laserdisc, Video Tape, DVD), and I actually have both versions on DVD. So I accept that I might be something of an extreme enthusiast on this one.

I’ve always loved Peter Gabriel’s music, and it’s especially great that his band includes such musical luminaries as Tony Levin (one of my favorite bassists), David Rhodes, Manu Katché, Shankar, Paula Cole, ‘Reddy’ Mela Amissa, Papa Wemba, Jean-Claude Naimro, Lévon Minassian, and ‘Styno’ Mubi Mutadi. The music is inspiring and beautifully recorded, and brilliantly staged.
