Thoughts On The Preons Gig 2/15
I should preface my posting by saying I was pretty sick at this gig. For the three days immediately before this date, I was unable to go to work and spent that time being several flavors of miserable. I haven’t been this sick in at least 20 years and have never missed three days of work due to illness. I didn’t really have the option to call in sick for the gig since it was our unofficial CD release party. Someone one said “the show must go on”. I’d like to find that guy and give him a wedgie.
Given no choice but to go on, I rallied and dragged myself to the venue. Immediately I began to wonder if I was going to make it through the show. I paid more than a few visits to the restroom while waiting for our set to start. By the time we got ready to take the stage I found myself having surprising difficulty tuning my bass. This usually takes about thirty seconds… it must have taken me five minutes. Three days of eating nothing and being dehydrated makes John a dull boy.
Despite being sick I was really glad we had the gig. Lots of friends from work were in attendance, along with some of the previous members of the Preons – some of whom appear on the new CD. During our set I broke into a cold sweat and was light headed. I looked at our set list at one point and realized I had no idea whether we’d already played some of the songs. My wife says I looked like I was going to keel over. As far as I know we played well. People seemed to agree. Brad was amazing, reaching for new heights and kicking major booty. The man is gifted.
The aftermath of slogging through this gig: I probably set myself back at least two days of recovery. I’m wiped out and feeling horrible. Hooray for rock and roll. And for Imodium.
