Software Upgrades
This weekend I took inventory of my often-used computer software to determine which titles were most in need of updates. As a general policy I don’t go for every major update; there usually aren’t enough new features to warrant the upgrade. At this point, I’m two full versions behind on many software titles.
These titles include
- Microsoft
- Office
- Project
- Visio
- Visual Studio
- Nero Media Burning
- Propellerhead Reason
- Sony Vegas Video
And technically I’m running a little behind the curve on my operating systems although I’m not very concerned about them
- Windows XP Professional – now that “Vista” has arrived, I’m no longer on the most current platform, although I’m not very inclined to make the switch. Everybody seems to be reporting issues with Vista.
- Mac OSX – I’m running “Tiger” and the recently released version called “Leopard” is supposed to be compatible with my older Mac. I’m only slightly tempted to make the switch.
It’s going to be a slow process, largely constrained by budget. Software is expensive and I don’t always feel strongly compelled to stay current on my versions. The upgrades usually support users of any previous registered version to the curren version, and there isn’t a discount incentive for being a frequent upgrader. It makes me believe a software-by-subscription model would be attractive to many users.
