Pod XT Live

August 15, 2007 by john No Comments »

Pod XT LiveThis spring I decided to update my live rig to consolidate the functionality of my guitar and bass setups into a single signal path. For the past several years I have used a Line6 Pod Pro as my preamp, which is a good-sounding guitar processor with versatile amp modeling. However, it wasn’t particularly good for use with bass. Line6 makes a dedicted bass version, but that would mean having two completely separate rigs. My solution was to sell my old unit and replace it with the Line6 Pod XT Live. This unit is basically a hardware platform with the ability to process any instrument, and Line6 has additional amp models available including bass amps. In order to maximize the potential of the Pod XT Live, I loaded it with all available model packs: FX junkie, metal shop, collector classics, bass expansion. I also installed the “gear box” software which allows the unit to present itself as a VST plugin.

The Pod XT Live has built-in USB which allows it to easily connect to a computer for deep editing. I spent a single evening programming all my patches for a recent 80s Invasion show, and did all of the patch setup work without ever opening the manual. That is the test of a well-designed piece of equipment. Once the driver was installed on my laptop, simply connecting the Pod XT Live opened the editing software. It’s easy to get great sounds and I did some test recording to Garage Band and ProTools.

Onstage is the true test of this kind of unit. It has great tone and plenty of options for amp model, speaker cabinet model, microphone placement, plus flexible effects and signal routing. Last weekend was my first opportunity to really push this machine’s boundaries, with tons of quick switches during / between songs onstage, along with some fairly dense tones requiring a lot of processing. The tones were still very detailed and articulate, and were easy to balance in the mix with the layered keyboards and vocal harmonies.

It turned out that this pedal is nearly the same size as my old MIDI controller pedal. So I just put it in the same flight case for now. It’s still my intention to get a new case for it. I’d like to find something that with a removable lid and enough space for a cable doghouse. I can’t seem to leave any of my gear alone and always have the urge to modify… for the Pod XT Live, I’d like to (1) add another continuous controller pedal (2) set the unit up for remote power (3) build a custom multi-pin connector that allows simple interface with my amp rack (4) perhaps add a small LED light source that illuminates the pedal on dark stages.

Line6 has been great to work with and I’m impressed with their products. It took a lot to lure me away from my tube amps. The Pod is a great machine. As a guitar preamp / processor it has earned its stripes, and I’ll  be using it at upcoming bass gigs as well.
